Vinyl Siding Help, F.A.Q. and Advice
The following are questions that we are often asked about siding:
Q:
Can I install vinyl
siding myself?
A:
Installing vinyl
siding is not a simple "do it yourself job" and is better left to
siding installation professionals who have the necessary skills and
equipment to do the job right the first time.
Q:
How long are vinyl
siding warranties good for?
A:
Vinyl siding warranties can vary by manufacturer. Shown here is one example of a top brand:
"Royal Building Products ... are and will be free from manufacturing defects which result in peeling, flaking, chipping, splitting or blistering. This warranty will remain in effect during your lifetime as long as you are the owner of the Property, subject to the terms of transferability set out herein. Royal also warrants the Products to be resistant to dents due to their exceptional material and design. ... All failures to Products covered by this warranty will be repaired, replaced or restored by Royal in accordance with the terms and conditions of this warranty. ... In additionto the foregoing, Royal warrants the Products made of solid vinyl against damages caused by hail."

Q:
Do I ever have to
paint vinyl siding?
A:
No! Vinyl siding is
virtually maintenance free. The most you ever have to do is give
your home a washing with soap and water once a year.
Q:
Does vinyl siding
come with matching trim?
A:
All leading vinyl siding manufacturers offer a wide variety of trim pieces. Everything from function utility trims to wide decorative corners. Most matching trim items are available in all vinyl siding colors.
Q:
Does vinyl siding
have seams?
A:
Vinyl siding is
generally available in 12' to 12.5' lengths, so it needs to be
overlapped at the ends to cover an entire wall. Quality vinyl siding
is designed to provide a virtually seamless appearance and a good
siding installer will lap you siding away from traffic to further
minimize the laps.
| Q: |
How much does vinyl
siding cost? |
A:
Because we offer
sidings at a number of price points to fits any need and any budget,
and because every home and vinyl siding job is unique, there is no
way to answer this question. The best thing to do is invite us to your home to measure it accurately and discuss
other needs you may have.
Q:
What is the R-value
for insulated vinyl siding?
A:
When insulated vinyl
siding is applied to your home, the R-value of exterior walls
increases by as much as 22 percent—providing a dramatic enhancement
in thermal control. Other benefits include quiter walls and
generally, a more durable exterior.
Q:
What should I
expect? How long does it usually take?
A:
If you've ever painted, you know that the bulk of your time is spent preparing the surface and doing the trim. It's like that with vinyl siding installations, too.
Preparing the Surface. Before vinyl siding can be installed, the wall needs to be flat and firm. Old vinyl siding needs to be removed and a new vapour barrier installed. If you have stucco on your house, the wall needs to be strapped using wood. If there is soft wood in your walls it needs to be replaced. Insulation can be installed and windows may need to be built-out and capped.
Installing the Trim. Next come the corner posts, window and door surrounds, and other trim elements. With these in place,we will install a starter strip which serves as a "hook" for the siding.
Installing the Siding. At this point, we will begin to install the siding panels, working upwards from the bottom of each wall.
While most jobs take about a week to complete, you should check with your contractor for specifics. The time required will depend on the size and condition of your home, as well as the amount of detailing to be done.
